"Swinter" Dressing Guide

If you don't get the Phineas and Ferb reference, we can't be friends.

Living in North Carolina, we have a very strange Fall and Spring season. They don't really exist. In their place, we have this strange season changing mash up. For those who don't experience this, its usually cold in the mornings, like roughly 30 - 40 degrees, then warms up to 50 -70 degrees in the afternoon. The key to dressing for this type of weather is layers.

Depending on the weather change during the day, I alter my outfit for survival. Usually I start with a base outfit, then add to it or if I am really feeling a jacket, I start with that, then create the base outfit.

Base Outfit 1: Its going to be HAWT midday, but a couple degrees cooler in the AM. So I start with some cool loose denim cutoffs and over size tee, that I knot because if not, I look pants less. But for the chillier part of the day, throw on a flannel or comfy cardigan. Same can be done with jeans.

In the outfit I am wearing below (it was freezing that day) I layered an oversize tee with a flannel, and my mother of all winter coats with leggings and Vans (with fluffy socks but those were purely because its was very cold.)

Cool Jacket Outfit: If its continuously "Swinter"-y where you live, invest in very light weight winter coats. For instance, this coat (pictured below) is from Forever 21, and isn't all that warm, but that's fine for days when it doesn't drop below 40. I just pop on a simple tee and high waisted jeans under it and go about my day. When it finally warms up enough for you to shed the coat, you have a casual and chic outfit to wear. The lightweight versatility of the coat allows me to layer it, and not get super hot during the day.

Another outer layer piece to invest in if you live in "Swinter"ville is super light weight jackets. For instance, I found a super cool Ralph Lauren Denim and Supply bomber jacket, thats clearly a statement jacket, but most importantly, its made of very thin material. So I can layer it with a tee and have room to layer with a thick sweater. I also try to invest in vests, just because you can layer a jacket over them if you need to, but still have an extra layer to keep on if its still a little chilly. In the Spring time, I like to layer lightweight vests with tees and ripped jeans. Also see through tips can layer over a shift dress!!

And what to do with all these shedded layers?? Well that's what totes are for. Its basically a closet.
